Booklet Design

Swiss Design History

Project Category: Print design

Spring 2024

Softwares: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, and Canva

The challenge: For Project 3, we were asked to utilize our findings and research from our Independent Research Project as a foundation for an eight-page history booklet. We were asked to incorporate a grid system, concept, visual hierarchy, readability, etc. in order to develop a dynamic and uniform end result. The use of a bold red color that contrasts with black and white was not only a design choice reminiscent of the Swiss design style but a choice made in order to preserve legibility and a visual hierarchy. Overall, I learned various technical and creative skills while making this history booklet and am content with the final rendition of my design.

While brainstorming potential page layouts and compositions to use in my spreads, I began by experimenting with how shapes or subjects on each page would interact with text, and visualized the possibilities of text wraps or layering elements with lowered opacity. I also took note of the key principles seen in many Swiss designs, such as thinnly spread and small column text, consistent/ easily readable typography, geometrical shapes, and a strict grid system. I wanted to find the most innovative ways to blend all of these style features together in a way that was reminiscent of the international typographic style (ITS).

Final Design Statement: For this project, my goal was to create a series of postcards that visually communicated a potential world that combines innovation, technology, and sustainability for a better future. I referenced many retro/ futuristic designs for this idea in order to reimagine cities that combined a use of innovative public transportation systems, walkable routes, an incorporation of greenery (on or in public buildings), and organic-looking living spaces.
